Quadruple Interface for Unmatched Performance and Compatibility
The LaCie 301442U d2 Quadra External Hard Drive features one eSATA 3 Gbit port, two FireWire 800 ports (9-pin), one FireWire 400 port (6-pin), and one hi-speed USB 2.0 port that is USB 1.1-compatible. (Cables for each connection are conveniently included with the drive.) This quadruple interface makes the d2 Quadra ideal for demanding multi-media applications that require extreme speed as well as universal connectivity. The eSATA interface offers a blazing transfer rate of up to 300 MB per second (3Gbits/sec), while FireWire allows you to connect directly to your DV camera.

The LaCie d2 is compatible with Windows, including Vista, and Mac OS X 10.2.8 and above (10.3 for eSATA). If you have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the d2 Quadra works with Time Machine, which automatically backs up your Mac's system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents to an external hard drive and lets you easily go back in time to recover anything.

Superior Drive Performance for Power Users
Built for power users such as video editors, the d2 Quadra features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and a cache of at least 16 MB. Perfect for digital content creation, audio/video editing, DVD authoring, web animation, and more, the d2 Quadra can handle multiple demanding professional tasks. It can also be daisy-chained via FireWire or connected to your DV camera and is even bootable in FireWire for Mac and in eSATA for Mac/PC.

With a capacity of 1 TB (1,000 GB), the d2 Quadra can hold up to 1,000,000 photos, 350,000 songs, or 70 hours of DV video. If you purchase multiple drives, they can be daisy-chained and set to RAID 1 for data redundancy and protection, or RAID 0 for even greater speed. If you have different storage needs, you can also choose between the 500 GB or 750 GB version of the d2 Quadra.

The d2 Quadra also offers three power management options: "Auto" for energy efficiency; "On" for instant access; and "Off" for data protection. The drive also lets you back up files or launch any application with a simple push of the front blue button. This "shortcut button" can be configured to launch any document or application.

Smart, Elegant Design and Loaded with Software
With the d2 Quadra, Neil Poulton has fashioned a unique, attractive and functional drive that offers excellent heat dissipation features and space-saving options for stacking. The fanless aluminum heat sink design features exterior ridges that provide 60 percent more surface area for heat dissipation, keeping the drive quiet and as safe as possible at all times. The d2 Quadra will sit nicely in an upright position alongside your PC or Mac machines, or it can be stacked horizontally with other drives or rack mounted to save desktop space.

Set-up and use is quick and easy, thanks to LaCie's preloaded Setup Assistant that helps format the hard disk according to your needs. For instance, the d2 Quadra lets you easily create a FAT32 partition for use with Macs. LaCie's Shortcut Button lets you easily launch any application with one push.

Included with the drive is LaCie's Genie Backup Assistant for Windows and Intego Backup Assistant for Mac. Both make it easy for you to back up your files including your pictures, music, and documents, and let you restore your files to previous versions in case anything happens to them.

The drive measures a slim 1.7 x 6.3 x 6.8 inches (WxHxD), weighs 3.31 pounds, and is backed by a 3-year limited warranty.

5 out of 5 stars So Far so good   July 31, 2010
Computer Man (NJ)
This is my third Lacie drive and I recently ordered two more. I have been buying Lacie drives for about five years now, I continue to buy them because so far I have never had a problem with any of them. But let me state now that I always power the drives down when they are not in use which is by far most of the time, I can't speak for how long they would last if they were constantly spinning. The drives are easy to daisy chain if you need that, but for me the connection flexibility is key. I have Macbooks and use the Firewire most of the time but I can switch to USB2.0 if I need to have several connected at once. During certain projects I have ran the drives for a week or more at a time and they never get hot, at most they may get slightly warm to the touch with the back of the hand so heat build up is not a problem.
I have yet to find a use for their software so I can't speak to that.
I don't know why but their drives do seem to cost a bit more than other makes, but if they continue to work I wont complain over spending an extra $20 or so.

2 out of 5 stars beware La Cie's tech support   July 31, 2010
R. Pyles (Maryland)
I bought this 1TB drive 10 months or so ago. I wanted a firewire 800 drive so was willing to pay extra. I initially set this drive up as a boot drive.

Soon after starting to use this drive, I began copying files over to it - I assumed that's what a terabyte's worth of disk space is to be used for! This is where it started to show problems. The drive would fail at some point whilst copying large amounts of data to it. I would get an error message, the drive would then be unusable and would have to be force-ejected/dismounted then rebooted. Some data will have copied over with a corrupt/incomplete file indicating where the copy stopped/failed.

Thus began my journey with La Cie's 'tech support'. Right now, a month after initiating a trouble-ticket, I've been passed on to my fourth 'technician', who is asking me to do what technician #2 asked weeks prior. That wouldn't be so bad but technician #3 did the exact same thing, starting off by asking me to run Disk Utility on it. Of course I had already done that, both prior to contacting them AND with technicians #1 and #2. We seem to be stuck now with technician #4 asking me to hook it up to another computer. Trouble is I already explained to technician #2 that that wasn't an option, nor should I be REQUIRED somehow to see how it works with someone else's computer. I don't care how it works on someone else's computer; the fact that it won't work well with MY computer irks me. I have 4 other external hard drives set up on this computer, not one of which exhibits any problem. I'm inclined to believe that the La Cie drive itself is the problem.

This problem isn't so much now with the drive but rather with an intransigent tech support that so far refuses to fulfill the company's warranty. A defective hard drive is an annoyance but working with a tech support team that doesn't seem to know its butt from a hole in the ground is really unacceptable.

4 out of 5 stars Works well, but ...   July 31, 2010
Decolliber (USA)
I installed this drive via eSATA cable to a new Dell Optiplex 980 running Windows 7 Enterprise. When I run a file backup (using Second Copy) from the C:\ root drive to the Lacie, the eSATA connection always gets dropped after a few minutes of backing up, and the computer no longer "sees" the LaCie. The Lacie has to be powered off and the eSATA plug detached and reconnected before it can be recognised again. The solution was to disable write caching on the disk, but you can leave Windows caching on. Might slow down backups a bit.
FWIW: sometimes the cheap cables supplied by manufacturer are poor quality. Trying a better Tripp cable may help too. Also, connecting the SATA cable directly to the MB, rather than via an external eSATA, could also help.

5 out of 5 stars high performance   July 26, 2010
techygeek
This hard drive is great! It's not noisy and doesn't really heat up that much. I'm surprised at the stability and performance of this hard drive. There's only one thing - the shortcut button software is not compatible with Windows 7 so I can't use that feature. Also, they could use a better backup assistant software. But I could always use the Windows 7 built-in backup system anyway so I don't mind. What matters to me is its performance and stability which works superb!

4 out of 5 stars Win7 64 bit shortfall   July 22, 2010
Glowplug (Long Beach, CA)
I received this 1.5TB Lacie drive this week and installed it on my system which is a Win7 Pro 64 Bit with a ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard and i-Core 7/930 CPU. I chose the Firewire connection as it looked like it would be the fastest. Drive was found and proceded to do a Win7 backup. Twenty four hours later it still was not done. I than did some checking and found you needed to install a legacy Firewire driver. I did then than ran a simple drag and drop copy of a folder with 18GB. Sustained copy rate for the new Firewire connection was no more than 9 MB/sec. I switched over to a standard USB 2.0 port and the same drag and drop transfer rate went to 20-25 MB/sec. Another issue is that unless you buy the $69 upgraded version of their Genie backup software, there is not backup SW included that is Win7, 64bit compliant. I get the impression that Lacie though well made might not be up to date on the technology side (more issues with type of eSATA connection it will accept too). For now it works fine but it was disappointing to uncover these issues.
